Students sitting in a Pre-Algebra class will have varying degrees of ability when it comes to rounding and estimating. This activity is meant to be used with those who need remedial help and to assess the overall ability of the class.
It is a fun way to accomplish two things throughout the year rounding and your seating chart!
Rounding for Seats - Rounding Game
This Rounding Game can be used when you change the seating arrangement in the class. Four sets of cards have been made. One set for each grading period. We have provided enough cards for 5 rows or groups of 5 students in each row or group (25 total students).
Here is the Rounding Game Print Out:
1. Cut out the Cards below
2. Give Each Student a Card
- Numbers that Rounds to ___ will Sit in the First Row
- Numbers that Rounds to ___ will Sit in the Second Row
- Numbers that Rounds to ___ will Sit in the Third Row
- Numbers that Rounds to ___ will Sit in the Fourth Row
- Numbers that Rounds to ___ will Sit in the Fifth Row
3. After they find their Row or Group they will sit in the desks in order by value. Highest Number in the First Seat and the Lowest Number in the Last Seat.
Print out to attached PDF and cut out the cards for the first grading period. Make 2 copies because one will serve as your answer document. The cards are organized in columns. So the first column will all round to the same number the second will be the second number and so on…
Each of the four grading periods have a different place value to round to. The cards get more difficult by grading period. So you will know if they are getting better throughout the year.
The number of cards that round to a particular number is equal to the number of students sitting at the table. Each table / columb has a different answer to the number of cards having a problem that rounds to it. If students are seated in rows of desks, there is a different answer for each row. The number of cards that round to that are each different but round to that answer.
You can also add decimals. Put a card like 235.74 on the table or row and and give out cards that say ‘Round 235.735 to the nearest hundredths’, ‘..235.740..’, ‘..235.736..’, and 235.741..’
This activity has been used by handing out cards as students walk into the classroom. They find their new seat by matching the card to a number on a table or row.
The class starts off in an unusual manner, the students are engaged from the minute they walk in, and it is an excellent way to introduce the lesson on Rounding and Estimating with a Rounding Game. You check students cards as you collect them when everyone is seated. If two students are vying for the same seat, you have a teachable moment for them to discuss why they think they belong in that seat.
